Guten Abend!
I don't have a real reason as to why I'm posting on the hgw as this weekend has been pretty darn crappy.
I've been home most of the time really and checking my computer at half hour intervals. Exciting I know. But that's what happens when your computer loses its personality. Yes. Personality.
My computer is very hard working as I tend to use its full potential (come on, it has an AMD Sempron processor under 2GHz with 512MB RAM). So. Like I said. Exciting.
However, I will talk about Orwell's "1984" which I have started to read. It's exactly how everyone describes it. The first few pages have already printed a dark and grim future of a totalitarian state. Orwell abstains from explaining all the references to the world he has created, letting us picture it for ourselves which is something I haven't come across in a book for a while now. It is disturbing, there's no question about that. But, as you know, I am hoping for a "happy", "positive" ending. (Sentimentality would be impossible in a world similar to that.)
There is another book I am hoping to look over once again and that is Samantha Power's ""A Problem from Hell" - America and the Age of Genocide" which I bought over the summer holidays for a mere 2 pounds - surprising, as it is a Pulitzer Prize winner - from Borders. A fascinating take on the failures of American foreign policy and how it was influenced and should have changed in the past century. It is a non-fiction book but it works so well because it comes across as fiction in the sense that the whole subject is told very well. It is a favourite of mine. You should read it for yourselves. Ask me.
Anyhow. I'm surprised I have made a good post here based primarily on books. I think it's the first post I've made on books and the first to be read based on books. Stupid "mass media".
Well. Toodles.
Emad.
